In 1885, the Farwell brothers from Chicago founded the XIT Ranch of Texas. Texas traded the Farwell brothers 3,000,000 acres in the Texas panhandle in return for building the new Capitol Building in Austin. Today, the XIT is family owned and operated with locations at the original Rita Blanca division of the XIT west of Channing, Texas and in Southern Colorado next to the Spanish Peaks.
While their first herd may have been a wild bunch of Longhorns, today the XIT breeds and raises high quality Black Angus and American Wagyu cattle. Their commitment to a stringent genetic program yields consistent quality in their cattle with high body scores. XIT cattle are both hormone and antibiotic free.
The XIT has both cow/calf and custom finishing operations. Their custom finishing program is either 100% grass-fed and grass-finished or grain finished on pasture. Rotational grazing and in-herding with horses are paramount to the success of their cattle program. Low-stress stockmanship yields a safer environment for both their livestock and cowboys.
Core to their cattle program is their commitment to land stewardship. The XIT belief is that we must take care of our land so the land can provide for our livestock. Due to their land management practices and the Savory Institute’s Land to Market program, the XIT rangelands are Ecological Outcome Verified (EOV).
